As a startup founder, I’m always looking for tools to make my life easier and help manage my task load. Since there are just two of us in our early-stage company there’s always plenty to do. Are you looking for the sales, marketing, customer support or accounting department? Oh yeah, that’s us!
“Early-stage growth” should be code for “over-stretched founders”!
Starting a business is exciting, but a little help never went a miss. Here are the ten tools that I use every day to make my life as a co-founder that little bit easier.
Used to coordinate tasks and projects with the team (my other co-founder), Asana has a great free plan which still gives you enough functionality to successfully plan/map out your workflow and optimise your time.
Trello is the lifeline of product management related tasks with my awesome dev team who are based overseas. It lets us conceptualise updates and developments, receive feedback/estimates, share comments and then track the progress as they move from ‘approved’ to ‘underway’ to ‘QA’ to ‘shipped’ and back to ‘QA’ 😉 Again, the free version has plenty of useful features for cash strapped startups.
- Google Analytics
Knowing who’s visiting your site is important for a company, right?! Wrong! It’s mega important! Analytics is a great free tool from Google that allows you to track who’s visiting your site, where they came from, what they did on your site and much more! If you get deep into it, you can start creating and tracking events and goals to start understanding your users’ behaviour. Cool stuff.
Excellent communication tool from Sweden! And free — we like that. I use skype daily to communicate with the project manager and CEO of our outsourced development partner. It’s possible that they think having a new skype notification from me every hour is annoying, but I think it’s great!
Honestly, I’m on LinkedIn a couple of times an hour to connect with potential customers, drone pilots, integration partners and old colleagues. As well as posting content for VReel and also to grow my personal brand! As VReel is primarily a b2b service, we find that LinkedIn Ads are exceptionally powerful to reach our target audience. CPC is slightly higher than other platforms, but the laser vision of the targeting makes it worth it.
- Final Cut Pro X
We’re a stock video platform, so naturally, we make a lot of video marketing campaigns — “practice what you preach” and all that. Disclaimer, this tool isn’t free and will set you back a one-off payment of around $350. However, it’s worth it. Final Cut Pro X is intuitive & easy to work with and means that we can quickly create videos of all types, styles and dimensions to share across different platforms.
Bookkeeping is obviously a huge part of any company’s activities, and if you don’t have the capital to pay someone to do it for you, then you might want help from a handy tool or app. Bokio is exactly that; it lets us track our finances while automatically sending invoices, bookkeeping receipts and keeping us up to date with taxes owed. With a couple of clicks, the books are balanced, and we can breathe easy that the tax man isn’t going to come knocking!
- Google Ads
Search Campaigns & Video Campaigns — the new terms for AdWords and YouTube Prerolls. Create, manage and analyse both these things with Google Ads. Since Google is probably the most powerful and sophisticated advertising platform on the web (they brought in $19.4 billion in 2016 in ad revenue), it makes sense to be advertising your business there.
- Facebook/Instagram Ads
Building brand is an essential part of any business. Facebook and Instagram are great platforms on which to do this while growing a loyal following. Coupled with the fact that their advertising platform has exceptional insights into your target audience, it becomes very possible to reach the right people you’re trying to sell your products or services to.
Competitively priced, high-quality drone footage makes marketing your company exceptionally easy. Showcase your business’s location-based identity, or make engaging social media videos with beautiful visuals. However you decide to use drone videos, one thing’s for sure, it will be scroll-stopping content, with engagement through the roof!
VReel subscriptions start at €69/month which puts the cost per video at €13.80! Yep, that’s €13.80 for a 4k drone video complete with a royalty-free license that you can use as many times as you want, on as many projects as you want, including commercial usage!
Disclaimer, I’m not affiliated in any way to any of the above companies (apart from VReel!)
VReel is a digital marketplace and platform for the sharing of drone footage. Find out more here: https://vreel.co -everybody that signs up for a free account will receive our welcome pack that contains 5 drone clips — you may have noticed that we like free things!
